UMBC, since its founding, has been a place for people of all backgrounds to participate equally in higher education, preparing them for meaningful lives and careers, working to solve the problems of humanity. In honor of Founder's Day, undergraduate students are invited to participate in an essay contest. The current pandemic presents a challenge to the future of Tau Kappa Epsilon, conceivably in ways we have not seen since World War II. We now have prestigious scholars programs in addition to Meyerhoff that address a range of key areas: Sondheim Public Affairs Scholars; Humanities Scholars; Linehan Artist Scholars; Sherman STEM Teachers Scholars, Cyber Scholars; and CWIT Scholars. Most people today are surprised when they learn that in 1940, on the brink of World War II, just 5% of whites and only 1% of blacks in America had earned a college degree. As we mark the 124th Founders' Day in the history of our beloved Fraternity, we celebrate the 1,549 men who have officially joined the Fraternity for Life this past semester. We do this not to sully the good but to empower ourselves to continually strive forward. Our founding fathers had a vision that was progressive and revolutionary back in 1899, creating an organization that would consider personal worth and character to be principle qualifications for membership. TKE has continued to expand to new colleges and universities, with our new colony at University of Alaska Anchorage and charter issued to Upsilon-Omega Chapter at Santa Clara University. Through these experiences and our educational programming, we are creating and fostering next generation leadership. To know where we are going, we need to remember where we have been. Thousands of Fraters have engaged with the Fraternity for Life in new ways. From being the first in my family to go to college to becoming Grand Prytanis, I am a testament of what is possible within TKE. Today, we celebrate our birthday. As the new year kicks off, our Fraternity is poised to capitalize on strategic growth opportunities that stem from our recent policy changes and internal accountability. UMBC was, therefore, founded at a time of great expansion in access to higher education, and we were expected to play a key role in facilitating that growth in Maryland. They wanted to establish a fraternity of men whose primary requirement for membership would be based on personal worth and character, not the wealth he possessed, or the connections he had, or the lineage from which he came.
